The term vitriol (from medieval Latin vitriolum) in hermetic alchemy refers to various vitreous gloss materials, particularly strong acids such as vitriol, sulfuric acid or other metallic sulphate.

On the metaphorical level it indicates the alchemical process of the Great Work, which consists in the dissolution of the hardest and most egoistic aspects of the person, as well as of the most gross physical elements, to recompute them in noble form and to arrive at the realization of the philosophical stone.

The term also emerges as an acronym, VITRIOL, formed from the first letters of a famous Rosicrucian motto, first appeared in the Azoth opera of 1613 by the alchemist Basilio Valentino, expressed in Latin: "Visit Terrain Interiora, Rectifying Invenies Occultum Lapidem, "meaning" Visit the interior of the earth, working with righteousness, you will find hidden stone. "

The expression was to indicate the need to descend into the bowels of the earth, that is, in the dark parts of the soul, to attain initiation by operating that transmutation of matter in the spirit that would have allowed immortality to be brought to light Wisdom, crossing the various phases of the Alchemical Work.

To this end, an acid such as a vitriol could be dissolved to melt the toughest stone and cause the most radical transformations.
